Scuba diving

Kefalonia has a particularly fascinating underwater world. The wreck of the British “HMS PERSEUS” that rests on the sea bed on the southern side of the island surely makes for interesting exploration and underwater adventure.

Kefalonia is considered an exceptional destination for scuba diving. The earthquakes and amazing geological phenomena have created extraordinary natural formations below the surface of the sea such as faults, escaping gas and fresh water. What will impress you is the rare ocean flora that can be distinguished in the infinite Posidonia sea grass beds. The unique underwater caves at Fiscardo and wonderful depths at Aghia Efimia, Skala, Argostoli and Paliki welcome many scubadivers every year.

The wreck of the submarine “HMS PERSEUS”, located in the open seas between  Kefalonia and Zante, at a depth of 52m, is a huge challenge for the more experienced divers. The Melissanis cave and lake exclusively offers the experienced cave divers a unique experience. The formation of rare beauty conceals impressive arcades at a depth of 20m, which communicate with the rest of the caves on the broader area. The cave, which has a depth in excess of 30m, is home to a small eel community. At Aghia Efimia, Skala and Fiscardo you will find organised scuba diving centres that offer lessons and tours to the island’s underwater world.

The underwater area of Ithaca is an ideal destination for scuba diving. The geological phenomena found in the depths of the sea invite you to endeavour underwater exploration and scuba diving. Although the island does not offer organised scuba-diving centres, these can be found on Kefalonia, which organized scuba-diving expeditions at Ithaca as well.
